Grape Guide: Bobal
The grape has found its home in the Valencian appellation of Utiel-Requena where it is increasingly respected for its ability to produce red wines with soft bramble fruit notes and dry, dusty tannins.
Bobal vines produce large bunches, tightly packed bunches that are extremely resistant to drought. It also seems to be adept at maintaining its acidity in hot climates.
The best wines undoubtedly come from older vines where they benefit from the natural reduction in berries and thus the increased concentration of fruit flavorus. Vineyards higher up, particularly in Utiel-Requena, experience fluctuations in night and day temperature which ultimately add a complexity to the aromatic profile of these wines.
