Grape Guide: Gaglioppo
Gaglioppo is known as Arvino in Savuto DOC
Gaglioppo is a red grape variety grown in the south of Italy, particularly in the region of Calabria. It is most well known, and appreciated, as the main grape in Ciró DOC, the leading DOC in Calabria.
It is also found in other Calabrian growing areas such as Savuto DOC where the variety is known as Arvino.
The grape thrives in hot, dry conditions and is resistant to drought. When the growing season is long, as tends to be the case in the coastal hills in Calabria, Gaglioppo can take on an attractive perfumed aroma profile which sits in stark contrast to the often acidity driven rusticity that greets consumers on the palate.
