Region Guide: Calabria, Italy
Calabria is potentially an interesting place for quality wine production. Due to a lack of investment however most wineries are either large industrial producers or very small family operations.
The region covers the whole of Italy's iconic toe. The go to wine is undoubtedly Cirò, produced with the region's key red grape variety Gaglioppo.
A number of sweet wines are also worth hunting down. Moscato di Saracena is capable of making luxurious passito wines with succulent apricot and marmalade flavours. These wines always tend to carry a touch of spice and prominent alcohol compared with similar wines from further north.
