Cirò is undoubtedly the go to appellation for enthusiasts keen to understand the best of Italy's boot shaped Calabria region. The wine is generally red and produced from Calabria's main variety Gaglioppo, which, at its best can make racy, vibrant wines that partner tart red fruit and ethereal tertiary flavours. Often Cirò is matured in custom toasted oak barrels to add a more modern style.
Cirò Bianco is also produced from Greco although this represents only a small portion of the denomination's output.
The most recognised name in the area is undoubtedly Librandi. Their relative international success means they are often seen as Cirò's pioneer producer. Tenuta Iuzzolini and Fattoria San Francesco are also responsible for some excellent wines though.
