Soave Classico is one of Italy's iconic white wines. Originating in and around one of the best preserved medeival villages in the country, Soave is one of those truly romantic wine places.
Just to the north east of Verona, the hills above the . Basic Soave DOCG is produced on the flat plains, but up in the hills, the steeper slopes are deemed worthy of slightly better wines.
In recent decades though its reputation has suffered from the expansion of large co-operatives consistently responsible for releasing cheap, uninspiring wines. Domestically it maintained respect, but internationally it was in big trouble. Although bulk production does count for a large proportion of the denomination's output, there are a growing number of smaller, quality orientated producers trying to wrestle Soave's reputation back from the brink.
Soave Classico was created as an additional denomination in x in response to growing volumes of characterless wine.
Any mention of Soave is still synonomous with Cantina di Venosa, the large co-operative responsible for almost x & of Soave's output.
Names such as Inama, Pieropan and Suavia continue to focus on high quality wines, often from single vineyards. It is these expressions of Garganega that demonstrate that fantastic wines can be made here. At their best, Soave Classico wines are dry, complex and excellent partners to local cooking.
