Sub-region
Cape Agulhas is South Africa’s southernmost wine district, where constant ocean winds and cool temperatures define a stark, windswept landscape ideal for slow, even ripening. Known especially for its flinty Sauvignon Blanc and fresh, peppery Syrah, the region is centred around the Elim ward and marked by gravel and shale soils. It offers some of the country’s most distinctive cool-climate expressions, shaped by proximity to the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
Lomond’s range of single vineyard wines, particularly Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, capture the brisk maritime acidity and herbal complexity typical of this southern coastline. The Sauvignon Blanc category in particular has emerged as a regional signature, often showing bright citrus, saline freshness and a distinctive mineral edge shaped by slow ripening near the sea. These wines demonstrate the influence of the cold Atlantic winds that sweep across the Agulhas Plain and help preserve acidity in a region defined by its cool growing conditions. Several estates based in the district also produce noteworthy wines while choosing broader designations such as Cape South Coast. Producers such as Strandveld Vineyards and Black Oystercatcher Wines make Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Syrah from vineyards planted close to the southern coastline, where constant maritime winds slow ripening and maintain freshness.
