The Condrieu appellation, officially recognised in 1940, has a much older viticultural heritage, with records dating back to Roman times. In the 20th century, the region came close to abandonment, particularly after phylloxera and the two World Wars, with vineyard area shrinking to just a few hectares by the 1950s. Its revival began in earnest in the 1980s, thanks to pioneering efforts from producers like Georges Vernay, who is widely credited with rescuing the appellation from extinction and restoring respect for Viognier.
The appellation hugs the steep slopes along the right bank of the Rhône River, just south of Côte-Rôtie. Soils are primarily granite-based, often with mica and schist, particularly the prized “arzelle,” a mix of decomposed mica and clay. Elevation, slope orientation, and proximity to the river all influence microclimates, while the steepness necessitates labour-intensive viticulture, often done by hand.
Condrieu is exclusively dedicated to Viognier, a grape that had all but vanished from France before its renaissance here. The AOC rules prohibit blending, so wines must be made from 100% Viognier. The grape is notoriously low yielding and sensitive to site, but in the right hands, it produces wines of great aromatic complexity, combining floral perfume with stone fruits, citrus, and exotic spice.
Condrieu has seen a resurgence in both reputation and plantings since the 1980s, but total production remains small, contributing to high prices. Producers increasingly focus on precision viticulture, and debates continue about the use of oak, with some winemakers favouring stainless steel or large neutral barrels to emphasise freshness. The wine has gained a niche following worldwide, appreciated for its luxurious texture and aromatic power.
