Although the first commercial vines arrived in the Willamatte Valley in the early 1960s, it wasn't until 1971 that a vineyard appeared in the Eola-Amity Hills, when Amity Vineyards was planted by Jerry and Anne Preston. In the early 1980s Tom and Sylvia Dumm created Glen Creek Winery. By 1983 there were 283 acres of vineyards planted. In 1984, after a campaign driven by the Dumms, the area was granted AVA (American Viticultural Area) status.
The Eola-Amity Hills is still very much in development, but there are a number of people who are making exceptional wines here. Perhaps the most obvious is Ken Pahlow, who is making some of the best Chardonnay in the world.
