The Overberg region in South Africa has a relatively young winemaking history compared to other South African wine regions. Initially recognized for its fruit farming, viticulture began to expand in the late 20th century as winemakers sought cooler-climate areas to produce high-quality wines. The development of vineyards in areas such as Elgin and Walker Bay signified a shift towards premium winemaking, with Burgundian and Bordeaux varieties performing exceptionally well. Today, Overberg is recognized for its elegant, terroir-driven wines.
Overberg is home to several key wine-producing areas, most notably Elgin, which has built a reputation for its world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Walker Bay, including subregions like Hemel-en-Aarde, is another prominent appellation known for refined cool-climate wines. Other lesser-known appellations, such as Klein River and Elandskloof, contribute to the diversity of wine styles in the region.
