Kastelberg is a steep, terraced Grand Cru vineyard rising above the town of Andlau, notable for its rare schist soils, among the few in Alsace, combined with a cool, windy microclimate. These conditions are especially well suited to Riesling, which here shows firm acidity, stony minerality, and tightly wound structure. Kastelberg wines are typically austere in youth but gain remarkable complexity and length with time in bottle, making them some of the most distinctive and ageworthy in the region.
