The Maremma area was upgraded from IGT to DOC in 2011 in recognition of the area’s inherent typicity. The area is primarily known for its reds from Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, although there are a number of white wines produced from Trebbiano Toscano and Vermentino.

In 2011 Maremma Toscana was elevated from an IGT to a DOC.
Vermentino is the leading grape variety of the Maremma.
The red Ciliegiolo grape, represents just less than 10% of the appellation's output, but, is experiencing some growth. This equates to around half a million bottles a year.
The current president of the Consorzio is Francesco Mazzei of the Marchesi Mazzei. Director of operations is Luca Pollini.
