Appellation Guide: Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG (Sicily, Italy)

Sicily | Sicilian DOC & DOCG Guide

In the south east of Sicily, one of the island's most treasured and traditional wines is grown. Cerasuolo di Vittoria, from the town of Vittoria is a light and fruity wine made with the local Frappato grape.

Although wines are produced with both Nero d'Avola and the local Frappato variety, it is Frappato that has the biggest influence on the wines. At their best they offer up uniquely light flavours of cherry, raspberry and strawberry. In Sicilian dialect, Cerasa means cherry and undoubtedly provides some insight into how the wine came to be known as Cerasuolo.

Avide produce some very good examples of the wine. Their Etichetta Nera and also their Barocco have always been stand out wines for the area, Planeta have been steadily increasing their production here.
