Appellation Guide: Côte-Rôtie AOC (Rhône Valley, France)

France | Rhône Valley

Great wines have great iconic terroir sand Côte-Rotie AOC is undoubtedly one of the great red wines of the Northern Rhône Valley.

Created in 1940, the appellation only allows for the production of red wine even if up to 20% of the white Viognier is permitted in the blend. Throughout my travels I've rarely encountered producers adding more than 10% and even that is hard to come by.

Sadly production is low; the appellation produces just a fraction of what comes out of neighbouring Chateauneuf-du-pape. Consequently the wines are expensive and the best are amongst the most prestigious and sought after in the world

Côte-Rotie AOC is produced with Syrah.
